What's the Difference Between personal vows and traditional vows (also known as the Declaration of Intent)?

When planning your wedding ceremony, it’s essential to understand the unique roles of personal vows and the declaration of intent — two meaningful elements that each add a special layer to the celebration.

Personal Vows

Personal vows are the heartfelt promises that you and your partner make to each other, reflecting your unique relationship, dreams, and commitments. These vows are an opportunity to speak directly from the heart, sharing what matters most to you as you enter this new chapter together.

Declaration of Intent

The declaration of intent, on the other hand, is a formal part of the wedding ceremony and typically has legal significance. Lovebird provides several options in the Ceremony Builder. This is the part where the officiant asks both partners if they willingly take each other in marriage (often phrased as, "Do you take…?" or "Will you…?"), and each of you responds affirmatively ("I do"). Unlike personal vows, the declaration of intent is required for a legally binding marriage ceremony in most places.

This section differs from personal vows in that it is typically brief, direct, and follows a traditional format to meet legal requirements. While personal vows are about expressing your love in a personal way, the declaration of intent is your clear, public commitment to marry each other.
